PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) - A little girl remains at Hasbro Children's Hospital, after Portsmouth police say a pit bull attacked her.
The incident happened this morning, as the 5-year-old walked through the door of her home at 35 Island Ave. in Portsmouth.
A fast-acting neighbor that rescued the girl says the dog had latched onto the child's arm.
"I heard screaming, I looked out the window, and I could see the girl playing tug-o-war with her arm," said neighbor Wyatt Joaquin. "I jumped over the fence, and put the dog in a headlock with my legs, and pried his head open."
Joaquin also says the dog tried to lunge at the girl a second time, but he managed to restrain the animal until help arrived.
Police tell Eyewitness News the girl's injuries are serious, but not life-threatening.
The dog, which belongs to a family member, is up to date on its vaccinations.
Per state law, it is being quarantined at an area animal shelter.
