NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - The architect behind Washington's Vietnam Veterans Memorial says she hopes her plans for the redesign of Newport's Queen Anne Square will make the space more lively, accessible and communal.

Maya Lin, who also designed the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Ala., has spent over a year working on the plans for the square, situated by the historic Trinity Church near the Newport waterfront. She showed off the design at a news conference on Monday afternoon.

The park was created in the 1970s by the late preservationist Doris Duke after the buildings that had filled the space fell into disrepair. Lin's design will include a fountain, new tree plantings and seating areas created from historic stone foundations.

The project is expected to cost $3.5 million. It could be completed by 2012
