BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) - A candle could be to blame for an early morning fire that forced residents of a Barrington apartment complex out of their homes Wednesday.

The call came in from 149 Narragansett Ave. around 6 a.m. When crews arrived, smoke was pouring from the building, which includes five apartments.

"We were sleeping and I heard screaming, a banging on my door and the fire alarm," said resident Carrie Frates.

All of the residents were awoken by the building's fire alarm system and made it out alive.

"Everyone was alerted. Everyone was able to get out safely," said Barrington Fire Chief Gerald Bessette.

However, a man, believed to be in the second-floor apartment where the fire originated, did suffer minor burns.

"He said he came through the fire to get out of the building," Bessette said.

A kitten was also also pulled from the fire. Eyewitness News cameras rolled as firefighters saved the cat's life, by administering oxygen. (See video to your left.)

The cat's owner said despite the damage, she is still grateful.

"I am glad to be out safe and everyone else is safe also," said Carrie Frates.
