EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A few days after lottery officials say the winning ticket was bought at a Newport Stop and Shop, the winnings remain unclaimed - and everyone is wondering who's the lucky person.
One rumor claims Rashaad Jenkins' father is the big winner.
"Yeah, many people are saying that he won, but even if he did win I can't say legally if he did win yet until things happen - but, it's good."
Neighbors are excited about the buzz.
"It's always someone who has a lot of money and has a house and it would be nice if it was someone who was living like we were living, you know struggling,"said Amber Riley.
"I mean somebody close to you won the $300 million, you gotta be happy for them and Rhode Island because it brings money to Rhode Island, hopefully."
Others say being a lottery winner brings its share of problems.
"Money won't give you happiness anyway, everyone knows that. Lottery winners are always sadder a year later," said Matt Largess.
The winning numbers were: 1-10-37-52-57 and Powerball 11.
A lottery spokeswoman says the jackpot is the sixth largest in U.S. history and the third-largest in Powerball history. The ticket price increased from $1 to $2 last month, and rising sales nearly doubled the Feb. 1 jackpot of $173.5 million.
Powerball is played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The chance of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number is about 1 in 175 million.
