NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Gov. Lincoln Chafee is welcoming some of the world's top sailing teams to Rhode Island.
Chafee on Tuesday is set to formally welcome the skippers of the sailing teams competing in the America's Cup World Series in Newport.
The World Series will feature top international sailors competing in vessels built for speed and agility. It's the final leg of a yearlong series of races held around the world. The first races get underway Thursday.
Newport hosted the America's Cup for decades until the 1980s and was a contender to host the 2013 America's Cup.
Tuesday's event will take place at Fort Adams State Park.
