Waters back open after treatment plant failure

BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) -- The waters of Bristol Harbor are back open to shellfishing Sunday.

The RI Department of Environmental Management had closed the area to shellfishing on an emergency basis Friday, after a failure in the disinfection system at the Bristol Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The DEM reports an electrical failure at the plant Thursday night into Friday morning resulted in the discharge of 1.4 million gallons of wastewater into the waters near Walker Cove.

Sunday, the DEM announced that the waters that had been previously closed - excluding those seasonally closed to shellfishing - are back open.

The DEM continues to investigate the failure at the plant.
