BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP/WPRI) - Barrington police say the former president of the Providence firefighters union asked for special help from the state police superintendent in a drunken-driving arrest.
The Providence Journal reports that police stopped Stephen Day Aug. 23 on the Wamapanoag Trail, after an officer saw his car swerving.
Police say Day performed poorly on field-sobriety tests, and he was charged with driving under the influence.
A police report says the 57-year-old Day asked for "professional courtesy" and told officers to call State Police Col. Steven O'Donnell because he would help.
O'Donnell, the president of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, said Day did not call him and he would not have helped.
The newspaper reported that Day did not respond to a call. A phone number listed under his name was not working Friday morning.
