BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) - Thousands of Rhode Island drivers are frustrated after a backlog at the DMV leaves them without their registration.
Bob Lindenburg, a Bristol resident, has until July 31 before the registration on his car expires. Concerned with being pulled-over, Lindenburg sent in his paperwork and check over a month ago. However, the DMV has yet to send back his completed registration.
To quell concerns, the DMV has notified police about the back-up. That way, motorists will not be cited for an issue that was not their fault.
For those that are still worried, payments are also accepted at AAA or online. If you have already sent in a check to the DMV, you can still use one of the other methods, just expect a refund.
Eyewitness News has learned that Lindenburg's case is not unique, thousands are affected here in the Ocean State. Customers most likely to be affected include those with last names beginning with either "K" or "L."
The backlog also includes public service vehicles and school buses.
