NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Construction on a Newport park redesigned by famed architect Maya Lin has started.
The Newport Restoration Foundation said work on the redesign of Queen Anne Square began Wednesday.
It had been delayed because of environmental testing at the site.
The state Department of Environmental Management on Tuesday signed off on a plan to address contamination that included lead and coal.
The City Council last year approved the $3.5 million redesign but some residents complained it doesn't fit with Newport's character.
The redesigned park, which features stone foundations and new lighting, is expected to be complete next spring. It is meant as a gift to the city in honor of the late preservationist Doris Duke.
Lin is best known for designing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.
