PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) -- Officials are urging residents to stay away from Melville Pond due to a blue-green algae bloom.
The Rhode Island Department of Health and Department of Environmental Management say people should avoid swimming, boating, or fishing in the Portsmouth pond until further notice.
The algae can harm both humans and animals. Common side effects include skin rashes and irritation of the nose, eyes, and throat. Anyone who drinks the tainted water could develop stomach ache, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. Young children and pets are more at risk to algal toxins than adults, since they are more likely to drink contaminated water. Officials say other symptoms may include dizziness, headache, fever, liver damage, and nervous system damage.
People who have come in contact with the water -- and experience those symptoms should contact their doctor.
