EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Drenching rains flooded numerous roads across Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts early Tuesday, forcing many local schools to cancel classes and breaking the two-week-old record for the Pawtuxet River flood stage.
In East Providence, emergency crews called emergency evacuations for the neighborhood near Waterman Avenue and Warren Avenue.
Flooding shut down roads in many other cities and towns. East Greenwich, North Kingstown, Cranston, and Warwick were just some of the places affected.
Local rivers and streams also continued to rise Tuesday morning. Meteorologist Michelle Muscatello says the Pawtuxet River reached its record level on Tuesday morning and is expected to rise even further. Major flooding is also forecast for the Blackstone and Woonasquatucket Rivers.
