PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Historic flooding this week has prompted Gov. Donald L. Carcieri to close Rhode Island state offices and ask all non-essential personnel to stay home, and he asked businesses, municipalities and school districts to consider closing for the day too.
The flooding prompted the Rhode Island Department of Transportation to close Route 95 in both directions between exits 11 and 14, and numerous other state and local roads are closed.
Because I-95 is closed, officials expect traffic into Providence will be forced onto secondary roads, many of which are also flooded, probably causing gridlock. Officials said it's critical that roadways remain clear for emergency personnel.
It's the first time in Rhode Island history the highway has been closed because of rain.
