CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) - A local lawmaker is sponsoring a food drive and fundraiser to benefit food pantries in Rhode Island.
Sen. Elizabeth Crowley (D - Central Falls, Pawtucket, Cumberland) will host the third annual "Soup for Supper" event at the Knights of Columbus hall, located at 20 Claremont St. in Central Falls, on Friday, Feb. 10 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Attendees that bring canned goods or other non-perishable food items will be rewarded with a hot supper of homemade soup, along with bread, salad, coffee and dessert.
The soups being served include Manhattan chowder, chicken noodle and vegetable.
The event aims to help replenish the Central Falls, Pawtucket and Blackstone Community Action Program food pantries. Monetary donations are also welcomed.
"The food pantries in Central Falls and Pawtucket are down to almost nothing right now. It's been a tough, tough year here," said Senator Crowley in a statement. "People in our community urgently need assistance, and I ask those who can help to please come, enjoy some soup and the company of their neighbors and give generously to support those in our community who are struggling."
Along with dinner, a raffle will be held for a Kindle Fire e-reader.
Tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the event, or by calling Chris at (401)-368-1231.
