PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The leader of an East Providence tent city is held without bail after authorities say he has failed to register as a sex offender.
A judge sent John Freitas back to jail Wednesday for violating the terms of earlier bail on the allegation he failed to register as a Level 3 sex offender.
The 55-year-old, who leads the homeless Camp Runamuck, was arrested Friday. A supporter posted his bail Saturday. Freitas was arrested again on Tuesday when authorities said he still had not registered.
Rhode Island authorities say Freitas was convicted of sex crimes more than 20 years ago in Massachusetts, and Rhode Island law requires him to register with police when he moves.
Freitas's lawyer says he believes Freitas isn't required to register in Rhode Island.
Freitas' next court appearance is Aug. 12.
