Says time isn't right, salary not attractive

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Former U.S. Attorney Robert Clark Corrente says he's not running for governor.

Corrente confirmed Monday that he had recently met with representatives from the Moderate Party about joining next year's race. But he told WPRO-AM that he has decided against running, saying the timing isn't right and the salary isn't attractive.

Corrente served as Rhode Island's top federal prosecutor from 2004 until earlier this year, leaving for private law practice after Democrat Barack Obama took office.

General Treasurer Frank Caprio and Attorney General Patrick Lynch are presumed Democratic candidates. Lincoln Chafee is exploring a run as an independent, and Republican Rory Smith declared his candidacy last month.
