PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Republican former Sen. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island hopes to join the handful of independent politicians who have won a governor's seat.
Many independent candidates struggle to get noticed. But analysts and former independent governors say Chafee can mount a serious run. They say he has name recognition, a fundraising network and a political resume.
No sitting governor of a U.S. state is independent. Only about a half-dozen have been elected since the beginning of the 20th century.
The list includes former professional wrestler Jesse Ventura, who served a single term as Minnesota governor. Maine has elected two independent governors. And Lowell Weicker Jr. was elected Connecticut governor in 1990 after leaving the GOP.
