Washington, D.C. (WPRI) - Nearly a million dollars in fire safety grants has been awarded to fire departments in two local communities.

Rhode Island's  U.S Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Representatives Jim Langevin and David Cicilline announced the federal funding Monday.

We've learned  the North Kingstown Fire Department will receive $577,631, and the Woonsocket Fire Department will receive $299,250.

The money will be used to upgrade communications equipment and provide essential emergency training to firefighters and paramedics.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants were made available through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
