PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Rhode Island House lawmakers have voted to allow gay and unmarried couple the right to plan funerals for their partners, despite Governor Donald Carcieri's opposition.
If the state Senate approves the bill as well it will become law. In November, Governor Carcieri vetoed the bill that would give partners funeral planning rights.
Carcieri said he vetoed the bill because it breaks down the principals of marriage between a man and woman.
The bill would require couples to be in a relationship for at least one year and meet other criteria, such as owning property together.
