PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Forbes Magazine ranks Rhode Island number one when it comes to safe drivers.
The list was published in the most recent edition of the magazine. While Rhode Island has more fatal accidents than other states, Forbes says strict traffic laws and educational initiatives have placed it among one of the safest to travel through.
Michael Lewis, the director of Rhode Island's Department of Transportation says the state spends a million dollars a year in government grants on media events, as well as TV and radio ads to promote safe driving.
Rhode Island also has laws against aggressive driving, strict blood-alchol-level enforcement for drivers, helmet and seatbelt laws, as well as texting while driving ban in effect.
Massachusetts ranked fourth in the country for safe driving.
