Man turns himself in for Georgia murder

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)- A man wanted in connection with a murder in Clayton County, Georgia has turned himself in to Providence Police.  

Julius Thomas was taken into custody Wednesday night at the Providence Police station. The 20-year-old is accused of killing a cab driver last month in Georgia.

Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements tells Eyewitness News that the man turned himself in after reaching out to the pastor of Providence's Victory Outreach Center.

"This young man did the right thing. He reached out to the faith community and they did the right thing and reached out to us", Clements said.

Pastor Sherrod Jones spoke with Thomas and says the suspect didn't even know he was wanted.

"He was just scared for his life so he came here. He hadn't even been here 4 or 5 days and next thing you know, there's a warrant for his arrest", said Pastor Jones.

Pastor Jones said Thomas immediately decided to turn himself in, maintaining his innocence.

Julius Thomas is not facing any charges in Rhode Island. He will be the subject of an extradition hearing before being turned over to Clayton County authorities.
