PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)- An inmate charged with attacking patients and employees at Eleanor Slater Hospital faced a judge in Providence County Superior Court Wednesday.
Anthony Tavares is charged with with seven counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of simple assault, and two counts of assault on a health care provider.
Tavares allegedly attacked hospital staff and patients on June 7, using a pencil, his hands and feet.
He was granted bail but did not have the necessary funds and is currently being held at the ACI.
Tavares has been at the hospital since 2001, when he was deemed incompetent to stand trial for the stabbing death of his case worker.
A psychiatric evaluation showed he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.
