EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)-  East Providence police have identified the people involved in an attempted murder case.

Investigators said a family member found Lucy Ponte, 54, severely beaten in her Larchwood Drive home shortly before 7 a.m. Monday morning.

As of Tuesday afternoon, she remained in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police do not believe a weapon was used in the assault.

Officials believe her husband, Mario Ponte, 48, assaulted his wife in their home. He was found dead in Seekonk earlier that morning. Police believe Mario Ponte took his own life.

They said he has a history of domestic-related assaults in Rhode Island.

Police said the couple was married for more than 20 years and has two adult sons.

The investigation is ongoing.
