EAST PROVIDENCE R.I. (WPRI) – A wild police chase on Saturday ended with two teenagers in police custody. Now, the accused teens are facing trouble and a judge.
The chase started Saturday after the teens were pulled over in a routine traffic stop on 195 East.
After checking the license plates of the car, police determined the car was stolen.
The teens, the 17-year-old driver and 18-year-old passenger, Tarronce Stowe, took off exiting the highway and headed east on Warren Avenue in East Providence.
The driver then tried to cut through the Chelo’s restaurant parking lot, and hit another car parked in the parking lot..
Eyewitnesses say the driver of the stolen car jumped the curb and went speeding across the lawn narrowly missing the corner of the building.
“They chased the car into the parking lot over here, came up over the grass, just missed the building by a couple of feet, ended up hitting another parked car,” said Jarod Chelo, Chelo's Manager.
The teens took off on foot and were arrested by police in nearby woods.
In court Monday, one of the accused in the chase, Tarronce Stowe, faced a judge on the charges. Police said he knew the car was stolen and gave them a fake name.
He’s now charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and obstruction.
Cheryl Carpenter of Tiverton, who owns the car that was hit, says she is just thankful that they were not outside when the car sped through or it could have been a completely different scene altogether.
“If we didn’t have dessert, we would have been coming out when the car actually came right up here on the sidewalk. It could have been a different scene all together,” said Carpenter.
Stowe, who has no prior record, was released on $10,000 personal recognizance.
The second teen accused is a juvenile and will not be identified. He is scheduled to appear in court sometime Monday afternoon.
Police said the 17-year-old driver did not have a license.
