Suspects had cards in their and others' names

WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) -- Rhode Island State Police arrested two New York men in West Greenwich on Tuesday afternoon on charges they possessed fraudulent credit cards.

A state trooper had stopped a motor vehicle for speeding on I-95 north about 2 p.m. But during what's typically a routine traffic stop, the trooper discovered 31 credit cards of various types -- some with the driver's name on them, others with other names on them.

With assistance from their own Financial Crimes Unit as well as the U.S. Secret Service, "the investigation revealed that the credit cards were fraudulent and were encoded with information from stolen credit cards," the state police said in a news release.

Emendjer Mathurin, 22, of Queens Village, NY, and Abdul Springer, 37, of Jamaica, NY, were charged with obtaining credit cards through fraudulent means.

The police investigation is ongoing.
