PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A Warwick man is now pleading guilty to federal charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm - after investigators said he got his wife to buy firearms to stockpile them for "doomsday."
Peter A. Laporte, 47, was arrested by federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms last August when he went to pick up some of the items.
He admitted to a federal court Monday that he'd orchestrated the purchases, accompanying his wife to a federally licensed firearms dealer in the Wyoming section of Richmond. Laporte told her to buy, among other items, four 9mm pistols, a .357 revolver, two semi-automatic assault rifles, two shotguns and more than 750 rounds of ammunition.
The guilty plea was announced in a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Milind M. Shah.
Laporte is set to be sentenced March 28.
