PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A Providence Elementary School teacher is facing criminal charges after he was accused of taking a teenage former student to Miami without his parents permission.

The arrest affidavit identifies the suspect as 56-year-old David Jones of Cranston.

Jones has been charged with interference with child custody, which is a third-degree felony.

Investigators say that Jones admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with the 15-year-old former student, where they exchanged explicit text messages.

The affidavit states the victim acknowledged that Jones wanted to have a sexual relationship with him.

Mayor Angel Taveras says safety is his highest priority.

"As a parent and as the Mayor of Providence, there is no higher prioty for me than the safety and well-being of our children," he said.

The Providence school department says they have placed Jones on administrative leave and have launched an internal investigation.
