SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) -- A shoplifting suspect accused of stealing from a Target store was arrested Wednesday afternoon - but not before sparking a massive manhunt that forced police to close down Rt. 195 for a short time.

Police were in pursuit of the suspect's car in Swansea shortly after 1:30 p.m., whey they say the car stopped in the median of the highway.

Police say they arrested two of the passengers. However the driver, who they initially believe was armed, ran into the woods.

Massachusetts and Rhode Island State Police both assisted Swansea Police in the search by ground and by air.

Police said officers eventually located and arrested the suspect on Route 6, as he tried to make a getaway to New Bedford in a cab.

The suspect was not armed.
