PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The former owner of a Providence convenience store was sentenced on Thursday for food stamp fraud.
Prosecutors say that 44-year-old Syed Shah will serve six months home confinement and an additional four and a half years on probation.
At his plea hearing on May 16, Shah admitted that from July 2008 until December 2010 he allowed food stamp recipients to receive cash instead of approved items.
Shah has been ordered to pay over $600,000 in restitution.
He also admitted to the court that the food stamp funds he obtained he used to pay for his cash purchase of a 2010 Mercedes.
