NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) -- Police in Newport are investigating after an SUV that was reported stolen, was found near the bottom of Newport's famed 40 steps.
The tan vehicle was reported stolen Thursday night, and was found sometime Friday morning.
According to Lt. William Fitzgerald, the SUV was likely abandoned in an attempt to dispose of it.
For most of Friday morning, the SUV remained stranded on the rocks, but by 12:30 p.m., it was slowly towed up a cliff bank.
Police said they are working to return the SUV to its owner.
Meanwhile, there's a possibility some stones will be damaged when the SUV is removed.
There's no word on any suspects at this time.
