SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) – The Rhode Island State Crime Lab is working through a backlog of hundreds of cases.
The laboratory, which is located at the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus, is also seeing a record number of gun investigations from around the state.
As of September 30, 437 firearms cases needed to be examined, and information about 413 cartridge casings was waiting to be entered into a federal database.
Two years ago, in the midst of a financial crisis, the labs operations were brought to a halt.
According to the Providence Journal , the lab’s budget is now up 11%, to $858,000, from $775,000.
The lab is also fully staffed.
However, federal money is expected to fall by two-thirds.
