NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - A Salve Regina University student is charged with animal cruelty, after police say he killed a rabbit with a hockey stick.

Nicholas Coyle, 19, was arraigned in Newport District Court Wednesday, and was released on bail.

According to police, an eyewitness said Coyle killed a rabbit, then used its body as a hockey puck.

Several Salve University students said Wednesday night they were disturbed by the allegations.

"It kind of took me back for a second," said student Josh Crino. "I was disappointed, because we try to maintain a good reputation here at Salve."

"It makes no sense to kill an animal for stupid pleasures," said Issa Demirgiogou, a Salve soccer player.

The university said Wednesday Coyle will be punished, if the allegations prove to be true.

Coyle could face up to two years in prison, if convicted of animal cruelty.
