CRANSTON, RI (WPRI) - The Rhode Island Department of Corrections unveiled it's newly renovated facility for female inmates.
Female inmates classified as medium security or awaiting trial moved into the facility in December.
The building is located on the grounds of the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston.
The renovations for the former mental health hospital came at a cost of $624,000.
Prison officials say it would have cost more than $50 million to build a new prison.
The prison has a maximum capacity of 213 inmates and currently there are 132 being housed in the building.
The building will eventually be named the Gloria McDonald Women's Awaiting Trial and Medium Security Facility.
