PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence police say one woman was critically injured after several gunshots were fired in the city Sunday night.
Police Cmdr. Thomas Oates said police originally responded to a report of shots fired near Lenox Avenue. He says the suspect took off, but police caught him on Adelaide Avenue. Oates say no one was struck by the gunfire there.
Woman shot in back
While making that arrest, police say they heard more gunshots in the area. They later found a woman in her early twenties who had been shot in the back near the corner of Broad and Sumter Streets.
The victim was taken to the hospital where she was listed in critical condition.
No one has been arrested in connection with that shooting.
Bystander backlash
Police said several other people were arrested near both scenes for disorderly conduct, after they allegedly threw rocks and bottles at officers.
Cmdr. Oates says one officer was treated at the hospital after a woman bit his finger.
