Ex-lawyer appeals corruption verdict

Ciresi insists FBI recordings led to unfair trial

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A federal appeals court is considering the appeal of a former North Providence town attorney convicted in a corruption scheme involving three former town councilmen.

78-year-old Robert Ciresi was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for facilitating bribes for former councilmen John Zambarano, Raymond Douglas, and Joseph Burchfield.

Now a lawyer for Ciresi is challenging a judge's decision to allow a jury to hear incriminating secret FBI recordings involving Ciresi's alleged co-conspirators.

The lawyer insists the recordings unfairly affected the jury's decision.  Ciresi is seeking a new trial or to have his case sent back to court for resentencing.

All three councilmen pleaded guilty to corruption charges and are also serving time in federal prison.
