Cops: Man points gun at mother

N. Smithfield man arrested on Wednesday

NORTH SMITHFIELD R.I. (WPRI) – A man was arrested for pointing a gun at his 71-year-old mother and threatening to kill her.

Brian Mellor, 44, was arrested after his mother called police and reported that her son had threatened to shoot her with a gun.

At 9 a.m. on Wednesday, police responded to 1350 Pound Hill Road in North Smithfield. Officers called the home and eventually spoke with Mellor, who came outside and was arrested.

Neighbors, like Charles Milano, were evacuated from the area and several roads were shut down.

"They couldn't tell us anything at the time," Milano said.

Police searched the home after the arrest was made and seized a number of weapons, including the gun that he had pointed at his mother.

“We have a serious domestic issue here, where an individual pointed a gun not only at his mother but at a 71-year-old woman. It’s a pretty serious offense, and it goes to show you that even in small towns like North Smithfield, things do happen,” said Chief Steven Reynolds

Police said they seized more than 20 weapons from Mellor about a year ago.

He is being held at the ACI overnight, and will be arraigned Thursday on domestic assault and weapons charges.
