NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - What started as a routine hearing of a new trial motion for a mom convicted of killing her daughter, ended with an outburst and Kimberly Fry firing her lawyer.
Just as the hearing was just getting underway in Superior Court, Kimberly Fry stood up and began talking, saying "Your honor, I'm not a murderess."
At that point, the judge halted the proceeding, saying the hearing would be scheduled for a later date.
During the hearing, Fry also fired her new attorney, Joseph Salvadore; whom she just hired last month after firing her intial attornies.
In October of last year, a jury convicted Fry of second-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Camden.
During Thursday's hearing, Salvadore was poised to argue for a new trial, claiming his client never gave her original lawyers consent to argue that Fry killed Camden accidentally. Fry switched lawyers last month , firing Sarah Wright and John Lovoy and hiring Salvadore.
Fry - who faces up to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years - was due to be sentenced Feb. 17. However, that date has been pushed into March.
This was the second time Fry has asked for a new trial. In November, a judge denied the first request. In that motion, Fry's lawyer argued the jury should have been given the option to convict on a manslaughter charge, based on Fry's diminished mental capacity.
