NEW BEDFORD, MASS. (WPRI) - A late night stabbing in New Bedford is under investigation.

According to New Bedford Police, Massachusetts State Trooper Paul Gifford discovered the victim after he came across a disturbance at 149 Tinkham Street around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The 25-year-old victim was found by Gifford in a third-floor apartment front hallway suffering from a stab wound to the chest.

Police say they discovered the weapon, a six-inch, chef-style knife in the kitchen sink.

The victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He is listed in critical condition.

Police said it appears the victim had an argument with an acquaintance he had met a few days earlier.

The case is ongoing and the detectives are working on identifying a suspect.
