PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) --Police arrested 49 people as a result of an early morning sweep throughout Rhode Island.

31 people were arrested by State Police and 18 were arrested and processed by Providence police on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the purpose of the sweep was to target violent or habitual offenders who either have committed criminal acts or failed to appear court.

Wednesday's sweep also resulted in narcotic and weapons charges, seizure of a semi-automatic loaded weapon, and one ounce of crack cocaine.

O'Donnell said some of the arraignments will included new charges for possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine and possession of firearms.

All 49 people arrested were processed at State Police Headquarters and transported to Providence Superior Court.
