EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) -- Investigators say a 23-year-old’s blood alcohol level was way above the legal limit when she struck two pedestrians.
State police say the alleged driver; Amanda Ashman of Glocester, was driving drunk at nearly 3 times the legal limit.
According to East Greenwich police, busy Main Street is where two pedestrians were hit by a car while crossing the sidewalk on Tuesday night.
Officials say a man witnessed the driver that hit them speed away, so the man got into his car and pursued the driver. The witness followed the driver while on the phone with 911 and giving descriptions along the way.
The man says the driver looked drunk and was swerving. Eventually, State Police caught up to them, and arrested the driver that fled.
In the meantime, an ambulance rushed the two victims to the hospital.
One of the victims, Patricia Daniels is home recovering from serious injuries. The other, Gene Hemingway is still in the hospital, and reportedly unconscious.
“The lives of two victims have been severely impacted for the rest of their lives,” said State Police Captain Frank Castellone.
Ashman was charged and released on bail.
