PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A former State House aide accused in a check-cashing scheme learned his punishment Friday morning during a sentencing hearing in Providence Superior Court.

Justice Kristen E. Rodgers sentenced Raymond "Chip" Hoyas to 10 years, with four to be served on home confinement and the remainder suspended with probation.

Hoyas pleaded no contest in October to more than 50 charges of forgery and larceny.

Police arrested him in 2010 on charges he forged payroll checks worth $70,000 to feed a gambling habit.

While serving as deputy chief of staff to former Senate President Joseph Montalbano, Hoyas was responsible for handling payroll for Senate pages and other State House employees.
