Suspected drunk driver accused in crash

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Another East Providence police cruiser is out of commission, following a weekend crash and the arrest of three suspected drunk drivers.

According to police, it all started early Sunday morning after a minivan crashed into a telephone pole on Warren Avenue. Cruisers blocked off the road with their lights flashing. However, police said it was not enough to stop 22-year-old Bailey Hardy of North Smithfield. She's accused of crashing into one of the parked cruisers.

Police said Hardy's blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit. She was arrested for driving under the influence.

It was the sixth time an East Providence cruiser was hit in the last week. Five other cruisers were damaged in robbery and shoplifting pursuits.

Police also arrested 48-year-old David Brewer of Pennsylvania just a short time after the cruiser was hit. Police said Brewer tried to avoid the accident scene thinking it was a sobriety checkpoint. He got lost, then got into a fight with two of his passengers.

Then, moments later, police said they arrested 31-year-old Joseph Anthony of East Providence. Police said he tried to go around the roadblock, and nearly hit an officer.
