EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) -- A Glocester woman faces multiple charges, including hitting two pedestrians and driving while intoxicated.
Eyewitnesses had told East Greenwich police they'd seen a car hit two pedestrians in front of Norman's restaurant on Main Street and then take off around midnight Wednesday morning. State Police also got a call from an eyewitness shortly thereafter who was following a vehicle on I-95 north in Warwick which was speeding and for which the driver appeared to be intoxicated.
Rhode Island State Troopers caught up with Amanda Ashman, 23, on Rt. 44 in Smithfield, and arrested her, according to a news release. They found her vehicle had damage "consistent with a car-pedestrian motor vehicle accident," and she appeared to be "highly intoxicated." Police reported her blood-alcohol level at three times the legal limit.
Ashman's charges include two counts of leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injuries incurred, driving under the influence of liquor and/or drugs with serious bodily injuries incurred, as well as speeding, marijuana possession -- and not wearing a seat belt.
Police are continuing their investigation.
Investigators said the victims sustained serious injuries.
