NEW BEDFORD, Mass., (WPRI) - A man is recovering from stab wounds after being attacked in a bizarre road rage incident, while transporting middle school students on Wednesday afternoon.
Police say the incident happened at the intersection of Hemlock and Dunbar Streets around 3 p.m.
Authorities say a 19-year-old man assaulted the driver of a private van who was at the time transporting a group of Roosevelt Middle School students.
The suspect was arrested shortly following the incident.
The victim, a 40-year-old male, is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at Rhode Island Hospital. Police say he suffered wounds to the back of his neck and nose.
Officials say the suspect, who is known to police and also has a lengthy criminal record, is also being treated for an unknown injury at St. Luke's Hospital.
Police say they do not believe the driver was specifically targeted.
School officials say they will have counselors available to those students in need.
The investigation is ongoing.
