Convicted drunk driver denied parole

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- The man convicted of killing a mother of six while driving drunk will remain in prison.

The state Parole Board unanimously rejected David Hazard's bid for early release Wednesday.

Hazard admitted he was driving drunk when he crashed into Katherine O'Toole's car in Scituate in April 2009. O'Toole was killed on impact. Hazard was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2010.

O'Toole's children, now mostly teenagers, spoke out to the parole board.

"I know you're looking down over us but I know it isn't the same with you being here with me," said her oldest son.

"New we can't see our mom everyday except for pictures and her ashes," said O'Tooles younger son.

Parole Board Administrator Matthew Degman said they denied Hazard's parole because of the "serious nature of the offense," the number of people impacted, and Hazard's "lack of insight" into what he had done.
