JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - If you're traveling in from Seekonk there's now a brand new and bright sign to welcome you to East Providence.

The new welcome sign sits on the Seekonk border at the intersection of Ledge Road and Pleasant Street in Rumford.

Joe Gibson from the East Providence Beautification Commission says the city recycling department generously donated money for a very important part of the sign.

"For the posts, which are unique in that they're recycled plastic and will never need to be replaced," said Gibson.

The end product is the culmination of a multi-year effort involving city departments and sign makers. At the East Providence/Pawtucket border on Newport Avenue, Gibson says they are considering upgrading the standard sign to a more colorful and welcoming version.

There are about half a dozen other East Providence entry points which also might get a new sign.

"East Providence is a very family friendly city, and there's lots to be proud of."

At this point there is no official date as to when those additional signs might go into place.
