PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) - A car smashed into a candy store in Pawtucket Thursday night, injuring one person inside.

The car went through the front of Candy From Heaven on Central Avenue around 5:45 p.m.

Lionel Messier, who was driving the car, said he was going east on Central Avenue when someone ran a stop sign. He said he tried to avoid the vehicle and crashed into the candy shop.

Nick Hindy, the owner of the store, said he and his son Jason were behind the counter when Messier's car plowed through the front. Jason injured his leg when he dove out of the of the way of the car, Hindy said.

Tenants in the apartments above the store said the crash felt like an earthquake. They were allowed back in the building Thursday night, after the building inspector determined it was safe.

The owner's son was taken to Memorial Hospital. Officials said he was in stabled condition Thursday night.

Police have not filed charges against the driver.
