PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI/AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Don Carcieri will join a group of governors meeting with the president-elect to discuss the tanking economy .

Carcieri plans to attend a closed-door meeting Tuesday with Barack Obama hosted by the National Governors Association in Philadelphia. Initially, Carcieri said he wasn't going to go. However, according to his spokeswoman Amy Kempe, the Governor changed his schedule in order to attend.

The nation's smallest state is in serious economic trouble. Rhode Island has a steadily rising unemployment rate that economists believe could surpass 10 percent. Carcieri and state lawmakers also are grappling with a massive state budget deficit as tax revenues plummet.
