PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Brown University and IBM have opened a multimillion-dollar supercomputer that is the most powerful in the state.
The supercomputer opened Friday at Brown's Center for Computation and Visualization. Brown and IBM say the supercomputer has 1,440 microprocessors and can perform more than 14 trillion calculations per second. That's nearly 50 times faster than what was available at Brown before.
It will be available to scientists and researchers around the region, including the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., and the the University of Rhode Island.
Brown says it will be a boon to researchers who deal with
complicated, large datasets.
