PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - State Attorney General Patrick Lynch is calling Governor Don Carcieri heartless for vetoing legislation that would give same-sex couples the same right to plan the funerals of their late partners as married couples.
Lynch, a Democrat running for governor, says Carcieri's decision to block the bills shows the governor believes gays are second-class citizens. Democratic lawmakers say they will try to override Carcieri.
The Republican governor said the bills represent an erosion of the principles of heterosexual marriage. Rhode Island does not recognize gay marriage.
Lynch backs gay marriage. He issued an advisory opinion urging state agencies to recognize same-sex couples married in Massachusetts shortly after his sister married a woman there.
