BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) - A Barrington teenager accused of killing his friend in an alcohol-related boating crash, is now out from behind bars.
Ryan Greenberg was granted bail last Friday, and ordered to home confinement, but he had to remain jailed over the weekend, until a hearing in family court Monday morning.
Greenberg was not in court this time, instead waiting in the ACI for the family court ruling. The last time Greenberg was free, to await his trial, he violated his bail conditions by drinking at a teen party at a Barrington pond.
Barrington Town Solicitor, Lou Pulner says "He got caught drinking a beer and he got sixty days in the ACI. He served that time. And I would question anyone who calls that a slap on the wrist."
The Magistrate who sent Greenberg to the ACI two months ago chastised his parents for not watching their child close enough.
William Deveraux, Defense Attorney for Greenberg, says "Mr. and Mrs Greenberg were as shocked as anyone the last time. And obviously very disappointed. And they understand as well as anyone what the circumstances are."
Devereaux and the prosecutor point out that Greenberg will wear an ankle bracelet during his home confinement, with only a few exceptions for when he can leave home. Deveraux says Greenberg can only leave the house to go to the lawyer's office, or to attend church.
"In my opinion, it's gotten through to Ryan Greenberg,"continues Devereaux. "He celebrated his 18th at the ACI. I think that's a heck of a way to celebrate your birthday."
